Our story began when we were living in Newtown, Sydney. In a terrace, with two very fluffy cats followed by two very small children, one who really did not enjoy eating out at restaurants, which was a problem since that’s what Newtown is all about. Add to this that we were watching way too much Escape to the Country.
Matt who is a Town Planner, and has spent his career (life) studying maps and managing large government infrastructure projects was dreaming on
realestate.com.au, and came across a Tasmanian property. A property that was land locked, hadn’t been farmed for over 35 years but apparently had a killer view and absolutely perfect aspect for a vineyard.
Sarah is an advertising executive with, with a bachelor of Interior Architecture and a country heart, who dreamed of the life we could make for our family with a little bit of hard work and ingenuity.
So, we visited the property in 2016, and even with grass so tall it obscured the view, we knew it was the one.
We got to work with hand tools but soon realised that we needed to bring in the big machines, which we did. Preparing the site, planting and now producing Premium Tasmanian Sparkling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir wine from our 33,000 vines.
Our first release of 2023 vintage saw us receive 93 Halliday points for both our Sparkling and Pinot Gris. The Pinot Noir is being held for a few more months before being assessed at it’s best with a bit more bottle age.
2025 will see the release of 100% Pinot Noir (clone d5v12) with our Sparkling Rosé, 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blanc and our reserve Pinot Noir (clone 114) plus the first release of our Highclare Estate Sparkling NV.
“Growing grapes in Tasmania is like growing grapes no where else on earth – if we weren’t in a position to be growing grapes in Tasmania, then we wouldn’t be growing grapes. There is just no way that we could have committed to doing this without knowing the grapes would be this good.” Matt Hurst
We feel so lucky to have found a perfect site and extraordinary winemakers that have worked together in harmony to produce wines that we couldn’t be more proud of.
